Welcome to Sines of Disability. We are a community of mathematicians, mathematics educators, and activists who are committed to disrupting and dismantling systemic ableism both in mathematics and in society more broadly. We are guided by disability justice, which draws attention to the the ways in which disability is closely intertwined with all of our other identities. We view ableism as a systemic and structural problem, and aim to dismantle this system of oppression that undergirds so many other forms of oppression in society (e.g., racism, patriarchy, colonialism). Our goal is collective liberation.
Here you will find a variety of resources to work towards this goal. Our first effort is to tell stories of the lived experiences of disabled mathematicians. Far too often disability remains invisible in mathematics, even though it is all around us. Our goal is to disrupt unspoken assumptions about what is “normal” and “ideal,” and instead celebrate the infinite variation in human experience. We also object to the ways that the discipline of mathematics, with its perceived objectivity and absolutism, is used to label, segregate, and sort members of our society. Such mechanisms play an integral role in upholding ableism in our society. We believe that a different way of doing mathematics and a different world is possible, and working to manifest that dream.
